Songwriters, dancers, directors, producers, recording artists with Reggae vibes, hip hop beats, and a Caribbean heart. Trap Montego and Empress Natiya are 9keyzz; athletic musicians who take music as seriously as the NBA as they are a team of dedicated MVP players making a commitment to act as one.
The multitalented entertainers aspire to top charts and move the world with their fusion of sound as they have big plans to release an album that’s on the level of Michael Jackson’s 1982 bestseller, ‘Thriller’. While they are strong together, each member of 9keyzz has had their own journey to get to where they needed to be to connect in NYC.
Born Scean Gordon on October 1, 1986 at The University of W.I in Kingston, Jamaica, Trap Montego discovered his love of music early in life. From his days singing in church to carrying tunes with his grandfather, James Lindsay, he’s always known music was the path he was meant to follow. And follow it he did, all the way from Jamaica to the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in Arizona in 2012. There he learned everything from recording engineering to film directing.
His partner in sound Natoya Johnson, known professionally as Empress Natiya, came into this world at home in Newground District, Clarendon Jamaica W.I on October 30, 1983.She too got her start in the church. It awoke a passion in her and from there she began writing songs. As she got older and more involved in the reggae culture – her musical passion continued to thrive, along with comedy and acting. Both of which she shined in, but today her focus is on making 9keyzz a household name.
They both took different routes to get to where they needed to be and it led both of them to New York City. Empress Natiya had spent years trying to make it, took a break to farm, and then returned to the inspiration of Scean. They met soon after Trap had taken a break from his classes at Full Sail due to the loss of a beloved family member. In need of some space, he turned to music and standing there was not only his first love but Empress Natiya. Fast forward to 2018 and the two had discovered the magic they could create with one another; 9Keyzz was born.
Since then they’ve worked day and night to make their presence known. With spins on both internet and local radio for their hip hop meets reggae style, songs like “No Competition” and “Lottery” have proven to be fire. Now they’re preparing for the next big step in their career; a Caribbean & Reggae Tour starting in the summer of 2020. They’ll be performing the newest single, “Lit Life,” off their May 2020 album ‘Harder Than Ever Before’ and more.
When they aren’t playing internationally this year, fans can catch them locally at open mics across NYC as they work on developing their label, adding more artists to their team, and dominating the music industry on all levels.
